The thing is, D&D's focus (presumably) helps newbie gamers think of a character. GURPS has a much wider scope, but that makes it easier for the same gamers to get lost.

Also, D&D is generally aimed at creating larger-than-life heroic characters, whereas in GURPS even if you're larger than life getting unlucky in combat can still disembowel you.
