Drunken Musings of a Night Out

Saturday night, following the cancellation of my team's cricket match due to rain, I decided to go out with a few mates to watch the two World Cup Quarter-Final matches that night (New Zealand v South Africa, Australia v Scotland).

The following is the jottings down of some drunken observations I made that night (god knows why I did this...)

Gilhooley's Downtown
* What is not a good song to play in a pub? Especially after a World Cup quarter final? You Can Leave Your Hat On.

Especially when emotional Scottish supporters take the song to heart...

* I know it many seem funny when you've had a few, but always try to memorise the combination of buttons needed when you decide it's a lark to change the display language on a friend's mobile phone to Simplified Chinese

The Victory

* Nothing is sader than drunken white people singing karaoke - badly. Except when they attempt (and fail) to elicit a response from the crowd by attempting to get a sing-along started

* I know working in a bar can be shitty - but a smile wouldn't be out of place when you're taking my money and serving me poor, overpriced beer.

Her Maj (or whatever they call it these days)
* The cover band that they had playing in here tonight - I believe called Roadstruck - were, to my drink-addled mind, bloody awesome.

They were showing a great amount of versatility, managing to play note-perfect versions of songs from Guns n Roses - Sweet Child of Mine to Metallica - Fuel to AC/DC - Thunderstruck (managed to get a good sing-along [chant-along] from the crowd to Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name Of (complete with proper final verse - always a treat) to Grinspoon - Lost Control. Hell - they even made Silverchair sound good. Of course, what topped off their set was finishing with a smashing version of One by Metallica - a great song to close the night with.

Apparently this bunch perform original material on a Wednesday night. It's very tempting to made the effort to check them out.

General Stuff

* It's amazing the queue's you see lining up outside various hot-spots around town. Sad sad people...
