So sharp they hurt themselves

I always find it amusing when watching television shows that are attempting to show how hip and cool they are by talking about bleeding edge technology. The CSI franchises have a particular habit of doing this. Witness the episode involving flashmobs for example.

So I'm watching an episode of CSI Miami tonight and, lo and behold they're attempting to show how close they are to the cutting edge again. Yet this time they've got it horribly wrong. In this episode, one of the morons officers, Delko looses his police badge while indulging in a quick bout of toothing.

What's toothing you ask? Well, as the web site says, toothing is using the messaging service available over bluetooth-equipped mobile phones to find random and anonymous partners for sex. Sounds kinky? Both the BBC and The Register sought so too. Except for one thing.

It's fake. There's no such thing as toothing. It was all a hoax made up by two friends to see just how far they could go with a rather silly idea.

It appears pretty far. Even the makers of CSI got conned into thinking it's real. Still they shouldn't feel bad, even Wired got suckered in by this bullshit.

I guess that's the danger of trying to hang on the cutting edge. Sometimes you slip and cut yourself.
